CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Thomas drained his glass and concluded his story about the symposium. "So, although we agreed on nothing else, at least we were all agreed that the fossil was a dinosaur."

Mary and Patrick laughed. They were seated at Mary and Patrick's kitchen table in Calgary, having a quick visit before Patrick and Thomas returned to Dinosaur Provincial Park. "So now what is the priority for the rest of the season?" Mary said. "You only have a couple of weeks left."

"Prospecting, mostly," Thomas said. "That's if the weather holds. We'll continue with the work of locating old quarries, and I'd like to send a few people outside the park into that southeast section we've been coveting."

"I wish I could be there," sighed Mary. "If it weren't for the anaemia, I'd have enough energy to go out prospecting." She grimaced. "Not that I can bend that far forward anymore. And when I'm erect, I can't even see my feet these days. But for you, Thomas, I'd bend over backwards if I could."

"That's okay." Thomas had to smile. "We need you to have a healthy delivery more than we need you to be out hunting for dinosaurs."

"More lemonade?" Mary started to get up, but Patrick pushed her back into her chair. "I'll get it, Mary. Just sit." He topped up the three glasses of lemonade.

"So, speaking of Sara," Mary hinted.

"Were we?" Thomas raised an eyebrow.

Mary grinned. "Well, why don't we? How is she?"

"How is Sara?" Thomas repeated. "Well, Sara is a fine palaeontologist. Dedicated, perceptive, precise, hardworking. She is a great team-player and also works well individually. She's popular with the others on the team, Dave and Barney love her, and the tourists seem to really like her too."

"And you really like her too, right?" she said.

Thomas caught Patrick bestowing a laughing glance upon his wife as he gently squeezed Mary's arm.

"Of course I like her. A lot, in fact," Thomas assured her.

"How much is 'a lot'?"

"A lot more than most," Thomas admitted, "but..."

"But?" said Mary.

Thomas shrugged. "I have some doubts."

"Doubts? About Sara?" Mary appeared genuinely shocked. Her voice got a little louder. "What could you possibly doubt about Sara? She's a brilliant palaeontologist, a tried and true friend, and an outstanding human being." She exhaled sharply as she started to laugh. "Oh, stop it. I'm not going to shoot you."

Thomas, who had leaned sideways out of the line of fire, raised his arms in surrender. He cautiously lowered them a bit, and asked Patrick, "Is it safe to come out?"

Patrick gave Mary a one-armed hug. "Mary is Sara's biggest fan. Even though I've known Sara longer, Mary is, in some ways, closer to her. Something to do with being women, I guess."

"Sara's as close to you as she is to me. It's just that sometimes you get on your high horse and start bossing her around. Or try to. She knows she can count on me to re-inflate her ego after you've flattened her with one of your lectures."

"You mean to say that I actually get through to her once in a while?" Patrick said in mock surprise.
